Word Study/Spelling
- Our focus on spelling and word study this year is to learn and understand spelling patterns and not just memorize words. You will not only be learning spelling patterns, but also parts of speech, vocabulary, and grammar. Each Friday, you will have a spelling pattern test that assesses some of the words on your spelling pattern word bank for the week.
- Most weeks you will have a spelling pattern list/word bank. The spelling pattern list/word bank will be on the homework log. The list will contain many words that follow the week’s spelling pattern and 3 sight words (or "red words"). I will choose 10 words from the spelling pattern list/word bank for your spelling test on Fridays, along with the 3 sight words. Other weeks, you will be working with parts of speech, vocabulary, or grammar, etc. (synonyms, antonyms, compound words, contractions, etc.) where your homework may be a worksheet or different activity and you will have a skills assessment on Friday.
- If you have a spelling pattern list/word bank for the week, complete the Spelling section of the Homework Log by choosing activities from the “Speller’s Choice List” (in the homework section of the BEE Binder) to do with many of the spelling words on the spelling pattern list/word bank. You need to complete activities so you have at least 3 points total by Friday. If you don’t have a spelling pattern list/word bank for the week, and we are working on a specific skill instead, then your spelling homework will be to complete a worksheet given to you at the beginning of the week and is due on Friday.
- Spelling Pattern and Skills Tests are on Fridays (or the last day of the week). You will be tested over 13 words (10 words from the spelling pattern list and 3 sight words) for the week. If you do not have a spelling list for the week, then you will be tested over the skill we have been working on for the week.
Reading
- Try to read for 20 minutes each night. Write down the amount of time read on the homework log each night. If you can’t read one night, try to make up for it on another night.
- Write titles of completed books on the 100 Book Club paper. This can be kept at home until the paper is filled up. When students complete one form, they are responsible for giving it to me and I will provide them with a new sheet.
- Read and complete the reading passage and comprehension questions.
Math
- Practice math facts at least 5 times each week. Please complete as much of the math fluency page as you can for 2 minutes using a timer. Then record the number of digits you got correct.
- Although it is not required as a part of each student's homework, I encourage all students to use the XtraMath website http://www.xtramath.org at home to help them become fluent with their math facts. Students use this website at school, but extra practice always helps! I sent home login information at the beginning of the school year that shows you how to access the website at home. If you ever need me to reprint that page for you, do not hesitate to ask!
